3Not Impressed with this unitFeb 09, 2010
I purchased the device in Dec 2009. It was a highly anticipated purchase as I had previously owned the Creative Zen M. Upon using the device for a little over 2 months, I have found that they screen is not as easy to manuever as advertised. I have found the sound quality much less appealing than the Creative Zen M. The application feature is cool and the sudoko game is fun; but, the screen recognition is not as user friendly as I would have liked.

2Not worth the price at allFeb 06, 2010
Unfortunately, my 16GB Sandisk Sansa View went walkabout and that meant I had to get another MP3 player...and fast. Since basically rediscovering music a few years ago, I cannot go anywhere without some in my ears. I originally bought the 16GB Sansa View after my 8GB e280 became just too small for my needs. The 16GB View was filling up nicely just before I lost it. So, with that in mind I decided I would settle for nothing but a 32GB MP3 player and not have to worry about space again. Or, at least not for a long while anyway.

The 32GB Sansa View was my first choice, but Amazon's idiotic shipping policy meant that I couldn't actually order it as they wouldn't deliver it to me! This meant that I had to look for the view elsewhere and failing that choose another player.

Anyway, after some deliberation, I decided to go with the 32GB Creative Zen X-Fi2 after reading many positive reviews on its sound quality. Frankly, I care nothing for its (alleged) ability to play movies or audio books, or anything else it can supposedly do. I simply wanted a ton of space and great sounding music...I was to be disappointed on the latter.

The main problem with the Zen's sound output is that it's geared toward the higher end of the sound scale. Even with all the equalizer bands set to -12, except for the 80 Hz (bass) on the graphic equalizer settings, the sound still leaned toward the high end. So much so, that getting a nice warm full sound from the Zen is next to impossible, regardless of what music is being put through it. Or, what headphones are being used with it. Even my Sennheiser CX 300 II "Enhanced Bass" earphones were impotent in the face of the Zen's washy cymbal crashes and overstated hi-hats.

It's impossible to get away from the Zen's artificial sounding treble. It sounds positively cartoonish at times and overwhelms the music, so that some tunes are unlistenable. It ends up being splashy and irritating.

Worse still is when the X-Fi settings are switched on. The "Crystallizer" and the "Expand" absolutely destroy the sound and these enhancements are nothing of the sort. They simply distort the music creating a very weird experience. The "Crystallizer" just makes the sound washier and the "Expand" seems to create a 'bucket on the head' type experience. In short, ironically, the sound of the Zen X-Fi2 is better WITHOUT the X-Fi employed.

In addition, the often criticised touch screen truly is a headache of epic proportions even with the latest firmware installed. Plus, changing the volume or forwarding a track requires the user to take the device out of the pocket and concentrate on the task. Players with a volume wheel and a proper button interface for skipping tracks are far easier in this regard and can remain in one's pocket while changing music on the move.

So at the end of it all, the pity of it is, I am forced to go back to my old 8GB Sansa e280 because I am unable to find a seller that actually stocks the Sansa View 32GB any more...which says it all really.

3How do you add a WAV file that the player actually recognizesFeb 05, 2010
I really like this player. My main problem is I would like to add a WAV file. I have tried using MediaMonkey and Winamp. The WAV shows on the F drive that it is actually in the Zen player....However when I go to locate my WAV file through the X fi 2, it is absolutely nowhere to be found in any folder on the player itself. AAAGGGHHH Help? I would use FLAC but it has an issue currently with random skip noises.

If I am starting from scratch downloading all my music cds, what is the best format to put them in...(mp3)aac,flac? any suggestions. I wish there was a point by point instruction manual for making this player easy to use.

If there is anyone out there nice enough to help this novice user, I would appreciate it.

Ron

4Very nice but...Feb 03, 2010
The product itself is quite pleasing to the eye and the fact holds true for the packaging. The item comes to you in a plastic case that is quite sturdy and reusable speaking of top-shelf price point.

The XFi2 (this model) has 8GB's internal memory and can support additional external storage via a micro SD card. The package includes a set of Creative's quality ear buds and several promotional fly-outs like trials to Napster.

The player sports a multi-function 3.5mm audio jack that can also be connected via an adapter to stream A/V feeds right to your television. It has many audio settings that bring in-depth audio quality but, with that quality comes a bit of complexity and may take several tries to get the settings where you like.

The biggest let-down with this item is a fairly uncooperative touch screen. The player's unlocking mechanism, which is triggered by the selector button at the right of the player screen, prompts the user to press and slide a "lock" icon to the bottom of the viewing screen. Simple enough but, it feels as though you might have to press a bit too hard. These players are bargains but, they still cost a pretty penny. Menu navigation with this device can be tedium as well with the, seemingly unresponsive, characteristics of the PMP's touch screen.

I suspect that the player needs refinement programmatically to support a touch screen more efficiently. I would suspect that the issues are due to the user interface threading models and not the on-board RAM memory or processor; the music plays uninterrupted while engaging the touch screen at any point during playback.

This player thumps for the price and it is updated with newer drivers very easily so, with that in mind it gets four stars. The touch side of the device is a pain sometimes but, it is still manageable. The product is also manufactured and warrantied by an established, reputable company and not some fly by night import re-branding hole in the wall.

So, there you have it.

4Pretty Solid PlayerFeb 01, 2010
I've used the Zen X-Fi2 for a few months now. Very solid player. Great sound. The touch screen is bright and works well, too, except for one issue (mentioned in a moment). I love that I can connect this to both PC and Mac and drag and drop files to it without any music management software. The only trouble with the video player is probably due to the encoding of the AVIs that I watch on it (tv shows, some movies): at times the audio and video get out of sync. Usually when I back out of the video and then go back in (no loss of play position in the video) it corrects itself. Like I said, I think this is due to the encoding of the individual files. Coming from a previous player that required me to convert and optimize every video before transferring it, I can live with this.

The player is very light. Compared to an iPod, with its metal backing and heavier internal construction, this would probably be preferable for runners who like to use Velcro arm bands. Instead of a metal backing, The X-Fi2 has an attractive silver grey plastic with a slightly coarse texture. Make sure you get the custom adhesive screen protector for this player; it perfectly fits the whole front side of the Zen, and with fairly careful use you won't need any case or silicone skin. But if you're someone who practically dropkicks your tech, play it safe and go for a cover.

My one big criticism is that there is no dedicated volume knob. There is a dedicated button to access the main menu (frankly, an odd decision since it's easy to get there from most any section of the device), but I think the player experience would have increased had that been a volume dial. It's very cumbersome to discover a song is playing at a loud level, then calling up the onscreen menu, tapping the volume icon and THEN toying with the touch-sensitive screen to slide the volume down. Not to mention having to make an appointment with the ear specialist. I have big hands, so maybe this is less a problem for some people. But I find the volume will jump up or down a few levels more than I intended. Finding that "sweet spot" with the volume control can be tricky. Maybe a stylus would improve this, but I'm not a fan of having to carry around a small item just to control volume level.

If there were a dedicated volume knob, I would give this player 5 stars across the board. SO CLOSE, Creative...
