An Improvement Over The OriginalNov 21, 2009 The Zen X-FI 2 looks great and sounds even better. It's easily one of the better sounding mp3 players available in my own opinion. X-FI functions gives the sound a nice boost that increases the fidelity, but at the cost of some battery life. While I haven't measured, I still get several hours of playback time out of it, and don't have to recharge more than once every few days. Depending on your use, you may need to re-charge more or less often.
The new larger display looks fantastic, but as a touchscreen it's underwhelming. Unlike the Ipod, the Zen uses a Resistive touchscreen which is much less sensitive and reactive than the capacitive touchscreens in the Ipod and some other touchscreen devices. However, there is an upside in that using this touchscreen works to reduce the cost of the player, making it much more affordable than an Ipod touch of comparable capacity.
The software can often be unresponsive as well. Fighting with the insensitive screen can be annoying enough, but then to press things, watch them light up in response, and then not doing anything..... can be even more annoying. Still, the interface is not un-usable. You'll get better at using it with practice, and use of a stylus may help as well.
The included headphones are quite good for what they are. They're worlds better than the buds that come with the ipod,. However, despite being good for what they are, what they are, is a pair of 20 dollar earbuds, and they sound like it. They pale in comparison to superior quality headphones like the Etymotic ER-6 (which I own and use with my X-Fi2).
Instead of an SD slot like on the older models, this model has a microsd slot. Also unlike the older player, the new X-FI2 can integrate media on the sd card into the player's context menu.
I haven't used the player with any video yet, but i'm told that it can be fairly picky about what types of files/formats it will play. Use the Creative Centrale software to transfer and convert your video.
Speaking of the included Centrale software, It's not that good in my opinion. It's clunky, slow, and i've had problems with the software becoming unresponsive, forcing me to kill it. You're not forced to use it however. You can use Windows Media Player, or simply drag and drop manually through Windows.
Overall and despite the many drawbacks, i'm quite happy with the player. Again, it sounds fantasic and it's the right price.
try a stylusNov 20, 2009 I bought the zen xfi 2 32 gig to hold my extensive music collection. I have other zen products and have been happy with all of them. as other reviewers mentioned the touch screen takes some getting used to. But I found that if you use a stylus, or a ball point pen with the tip retracted works also, the touch screen becomes immediately friendly. no more problems scrolling, etc. I can't believe that zen hasn't figured this out yet and either provide a stylus or tell customers to try one. The majority of the negative feedback in the reviews centers on the touch screen.
that being said , the player works great and the sound is fantastic. The provided earbuds produce a great sound, the menus are easily navigated. I use media monkey to store my collection on my computer and it has no problem interfacing with the zen. I would reccommend this product

High end MP3 playersNov 20, 2009 This is a very expensive MP3 player without enough information on how what codec to use for uploading video, movies, etc. A waste of money.

Centrale Software - What were they Thinking?!?Nov 19, 2009 Nice looking player. Touch interface is only so / so. I found it pretty responsive. I agree with another reviewer who said it takes two hands to operate it. Not as convenient as the original ZEN. Beautiful screen. I do not think the sound is greatly improved, if at all. I actually thought the original Zen sounded a little more open I A/B'd them with MP3 19 VBR highest quality setting during the encoding process using Sennheise PXC 130 headphones.
Software is absolutely horrible as in TOTALLY USELESS!!!! Could not figure out how to browse for my music files or choose what folder or drive where I store my music. (I don't use "My Music") I liked the original Zen software much better. Of course, Creative Labs decided that the X-Fi2 device WILL NOT RECOGNIZE the original ZEN software (Zen Explorer)
the best of the bestNov 18, 2009 This unit is the best you can get since it is built by the inventors of the mp3 portable players!
my only complaint is that they don't send a navigation manual with it that tells you how to operate all of its functions. I learned by using it but sometimes I could use a reference manual when I get stuck. other than that the sound quality is awesome! it will even use Ipod formatted files as well as any other file type so you will not miss out on anything due to limitations in unit programming. It has its own software upload built in but I prefer to use windows media player because I am used to it, and it is faster. as before there is no instructions to help navigate and use the Creative program that uploads to your pc. it is trial and error. When you get it running the way you want then it is awesome! The headphones are excellent because I use them on my motorcycle and hear the music over the wind noise. the touch screen is nice but requires eyes off the road to work the controls when driving. I would have preferred manual click buttons for volume control, pause and song skipping because you go by feel instead of having to look at the player to perform those operations. overall the shortcommings of this unit are trival compared to the performance it has. most players have touchscreens and that is a novelty, I hope they will return to button controls for the basic operations I mentioned earlier. Now for the price of the unit Xfi-2, 32gb It is a better deal than a comperable unit from the competition.
