4You get what you pay for (maybe a little more)Mar 10, 2011
By Christopher Weakley "Christopher"
After auditioning several small speaker systems (Creative, Logitech, Sony and others), and reading lots of reviews on Amazon and CNET, I realized I had spent over 4 hours researching a $50 purchase. Which, let's face it, is ridiculous. I'm also the kind of guy who will return a product if I don't feel 100% comfortable with it. (I guess this passes for normal consumer behavior these days.) So I decided to take a deep breath and buy the T12s, which had sounded pretty good in the store. And you know what? They sound even better at home. The sound is natural and very musical. The sound stage is adequate for a home office, bedroom or an apartment living room. The bass is juicy and for 50 bucks I'm not going to worry too much about the midrange. I think they do quite well in reproducing acoustic instruments like solo piano and guitar. They are detailed enough to bring out the differences between a good recording and a bad one. No, they won't make a low-fi MP3 file sound like a Japanese import CD, but then even my expensive floor-standing speakers won't do that. My advice to you is not to over-think your purchase and get the T12s if you're at all tempted. They're absolutely worth a try.

3Great Cheap Speakers, T20's SIGNIFICANTLY Better ThoughAug 25, 2012
By Orlando Echeverria
I wanted some decent but not too expensive speakers, so I set out to find some decent speakers under $100. I bought and tested 3 different sets.

* Creative T12 Speakers
* Creative T20 Series II Speakers
* Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers

After purchasing the listed 3 speakers sets, I had to play them with the various types of music I listen to, Rap/HipHop, R&B, Classical, Jazz, and Country. Here is my short review based off my experience with each item.

1: Creative T12 Speakers

PRODUCT: Very small packaging, nice design, easy to setup. Small speakers in size. Decent construction and great overall build quality. Speakers include one driver. Front of the right speaker is a volume knob, 3.5mm headphone jack, 3.5mm aux jack and a green power light. Rear of the right speaker is a second 3.5mm aux jack, port to the left speaker and port for power. The extra 3.5mm Aux jacks come in very hand for connecting to multiple devices such as MP3 Players, Gaming Headsets, Laptops, Cell Phones, etc.

SOUND: I thought they were decent until I compared them side by side with the Creative T20's which blew these out of the water in every way possible. I notice at medium to high volume levels the T12's tend to distort audio significantly, mainly due to the "bass flex" technology trying to push too hard for its little self. At low to moderate volumes they aren't that bad, but for anyone that is an audiophile, loves sound but doesn't consider themselves an audiophile, I would completely avoid these. The T12's don't get too loud, loud enough to fill a small living room but they will likely start to distort. I would ONLY recommend these speakers to people looking for a very cheap solution to simply amplify sound on their desktop or laptop.

2. Creative T20 Series II Speakers

PRODUCT: Small packaging, better build and design construction compared to the T12's. Speakers include one driver and one tweeter. Front of the right speaker is a volume knob, bass knob, treble knob, 3.5mm headphone jack, 3.5mm aux jack and a blue power light surrounding the Power Knob. Rear of the right speaker is a second 3.5mm aux jack, port to the left speaker and port for power. These speakers a much bigger than the T12's. The extra 3.5mm Aux jacks come in very hand for connecting to multiple devices such as MP3 Players, Gaming Headsets, Laptops, Cell Phones, etc.

SOUND: For $80, these sound very nice, I was actually extremely surprised how clear, crisp and loud they were compared to both the Creative T12's and the Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers. They have a bass port at the top of each speaker. After listening these for a few hours side by side with the T12's, the T20's blow the T12's out of the water in every aspect. The T20's compared to the Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers are better, especially in the mids and lows. They don't blow the Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers out of the water, but they definitely have a much better sound for all the genres of music I listen to. I would recommend the T20's over the Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers for the same price. I do however think the Bose speakers have a more sleek, clean design. I would recommend the T20's over the Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers easily for the same price. I did notice however with the BASS anywhere past the mid point, the speakers start to distort pretty bad. I preferred to leave the treble on max and bass between the 30-50% range.

3. Bose Companion 2 Series II Speakers

PRODUCT: Small packaging, not too small, not too big of speakers, perfect in size for a small desk or kitchen. Very clean, sleek design compared to the Creative T20 Series II Speakers. Right speaker in the front has a volume knob and a 3.5mm headphone jack. In the rear of the right speaker, power input, 4 RCA (red & white) inputs and input for the left speaker.

SOUND: Very clean, nice sound overall. They lack some crispness in the mid and lows. They have a very nice sound for the size of the speakers, nothing amazing, nothing horrible. They are definitely worth the $60-$80 range. You are paying some extra money for the "Bose" name, more so than a quality product. In every aspect however, the Creative T20 Series II Speakers beat the Bose. For the same money I would recommend the Creative T20 Series II Speakers over the Bose, but keep in the mind the Bose still sound very nice for the size and price. If you're stuck on getting the Bose and aren't looking for an "god like" speaker you wont' be disappointed, but I would definitely recommend the Creative T20 Series II Speakers over them.

4Great looks, great sound!Dec 01, 2009
By Devin in Texas
I decided to stick with Creative Labs after a good experience with an old pair of computer speakers that were included with my previous PC. I connected these T12s to my new iMac and they sound great! The glossy black finish and chrome power/volume dial are very nice touches. I like how accessible the Aux and headphone ports are in the front of the speaker. Setup was easy as well. These speakers don't use USB connectivity so they don't take up any of your USB ports, and you are able to use them on other gadgets such as ipods/MP3 players, Televisions, etc. I'm giving the speakers 4 stars because I would've liked for them to have the mesh cover over the domes...you'll need to be extra careful in cleaning these.

Amazon shipped the speakers fairly quickly with free shipping, even though they were sent out USPS.

3Fine for casual listeningSep 09, 2009
By docbrown88
These 2.0 speakers are easy to set up, look classy (although I'd prefer a grill/cover instead of bare speaker cone) and are much more reasonably _sized_ for a desktop than the Gigaworks T20. The weight and feel of the volume knob does seem substantial. So fit and finish are a plus.

The overall sound is reasonably clean. The Bass Flex design gives it very minor kick, but don't expect miracles. A comparably priced 2.1 system is probably going to be more pleasing for more types of listening. The highs actually seem slightly clipped to me vs other systems. Not terribly objectionable.

In short, if you are a casual listener that just wants some music in the background without much fuss, these will almost certainly be a nice upgrade to your laptop speakers or the cheapies that came with your PC.

If you want something more rich and enveloping, you'll probably want a 2.1 (3 piece) system that's not so compromised. Basically, better sound can be had for around the same price as these, as long as you can deal with the bass unit.

If you have a golden ear, or are very particular about audio quality, why are you even reading this review? :p

As a sidenote, this set breaks down/disconnects easily and so it's a fairly portable system.

5Very HappyFeb 05, 2010
By Robert
Great sound in a small package. I was surprised when I opened the shipping box these are small speakers. But there size doesn't seem to affect the quality of the sound they put out. That being said ---they don't pack a lot of volume. If you like to really blast the volume or want to play action games on your computer and enjoy ear shattering sounds these are the speakers for you.
When it come right down a review of speakers is always going to be very subjective. So for me with my Army damaged ears to try to tell you the sound on these speaker will definitely sound good to you would be a stretch. But I can tell you they have not serious short comings, my wife agrees they sound very nice.
In summary: PRO'S - Compact, nice design, attractive, good sound,
CON'S - Not a lot of power. Full volume will not hurt your ears.
UPDATE Feb. 12 2010 - The low volume I was complaining about was my error. I am using with my iPod and iPhone and just forgot to raise the volume on my devices. Once I increased the volume on iPod the volume great. It won't make your ears bleed but it fills a room nicely, and raising the volume on the iPod did
not effect the quality of the output from the speakers.
I think most people will be happy with these speakers.
